Even before the Doctor had explained, Ian had instinctively known that the vicious intelligence that had glared through Barbara’s eyes had not been her own. There had been more cruelty expressed in those few seconds than Barbara Wright was capable of in a lifetime. The image of Barbara’s face screwed up into a triumphant sneer as she enthusiastically strangled the life out of him was one that would haunt him for many years to come.

The creature that had stared out of Barbara’s eyes was, according to the Doctor, a Vrij. The old man had explained that he knew of it only from legend. Apparently its habitat was the strange dimension that the TARDIS passed through as it slipped between the years and worlds; a vortex of space and time, where the laws of physics as Ian knew and had taught them were without meaning. Once it had roamed the universe, creating chaos and disorder wherever it had struck, until finally it had been captured, stripped of its physical body and banished into the vortex where it could do no more harm. Or so it had been thought.
